Click a chord to add it to the end. Drag chords or use the arrows to reorder, and tap the length to change how long each one lasts. Changes come in the next time round. The fretboard follows the music: it lights up each chord’s notes as the chord arrives, with a scale that fits it, and rings the next chord’s notes on the last beat. Click a chord to look at it while stopped. Use the mixer to balance the band, or turn the guitar down to play the chords yourself.

No rhythm notation needed: the space between notes is the rhythm. Each beat is the same width, so a note twice as far from the next one lasts twice as long. Notes ring until the next note on the same string.

Guitar Tuner

Tap a string to hear it, or start the tuner and play

The tuner listens through your microphone, works out which string you're playing and goes green when you're within 3 cents. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere. The tuner is also in the menu at the top of every page.

How to use the metronome

Set the tempo with the slider, the −5 to +5 buttons or Tap tempo (tap along to a song a few times and it works out the speed). Choose how many beats are in a bar and how many clicks you want in each beat: quarters, 8ths, triplets, 16ths, swung 8ths or sextuplets.

Every click has its own column. Tap a column to change it between accent, normal, soft and silent. Accent beat 1 to hear where the bar starts, or silence beats 1 and 3 so the click only lands on 2 and 4, like a drummer's backbeat. That one change does wonders for your groove.

Speed trainer, silent bars and the practice timer

  • Speed trainer: the tempo goes up by a set amount every few bars, up to a top speed you choose. It's the easiest way to push a passage faster without guessing.
  • Silent bars: the click plays for a couple of bars, then drops out. Keep playing through the gap and see if you're still in time when it comes back. It's the best test of your internal clock I know.
  • Practice timer: stops after a set number of minutes, so short focused sessions actually stay short and focused.

How to use the drum machine

Switch to Drum machine and pick a beat to start from: rock, pop, half-time, funk, hip-hop, four on the floor, blues shuffle, jazz swing, reggae, bossa nova, metal and more. Or press Clear and build your own. Click a square to add a hit, click again for an accent, again for a soft ghost note, and once more to clear it. Drag along a row to fill it in quickly.

Choose the bar length, a grid of 8ths, 16ths or triplets, and one or two bars. Swing pushes the off-beats late for a shuffled feel, and Humanise adds tiny timing and volume changes so it sounds less like a machine. Click a drum's name to mute it, and use Copy link to share your beat.

Practice ideas

  • Set the metronome to 2 and 4 only and play a simple strumming pattern until it locks in.
  • Find the fastest tempo you can play a lick cleanly, drop 10 BPM, then let the speed trainer take you back up.
  • Program a beat in a style you never play and improvise over it for five minutes.

Want a particular tempo? Open the metronome ready set at 40 · 50 · 60 · 70 · 80 · 90 · 100 · 110 · 120 · 130 · 140 · 150 · 160 · 170 · 180 · 200 BPM.

Frequently asked questions

Is the metronome free?

Yes. The metronome and drum machine are free, with no sign-up, and run in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer.

How do I make the metronome click on 2 and 4?

Tap the columns for beats 1 and 3 until they go silent. The click then only plays on 2 and 4, which is great for feeling swing and backbeat grooves.

What is a speed trainer?

It speeds the metronome up automatically, by a set number of BPM every few bars, until it reaches the top speed you choose. It helps you build speed gradually without stopping to change the tempo.

Can I programme my own drum beat?

Yes. Switch to Drum machine, clear the grid or start from one of the beats, and click the squares to add kick, snare, hi-hat, toms, cymbals and percussion. Your beat is saved in your browser and Copy link shares it.

Does it work for odd time signatures?

Yes. The metronome goes from 1 to 12 beats a bar, and the drum machine from 2 to 7 beats with an 8th, 16th or triplet grid, so 5/4, 7/8 and 6/8 feels are all possible.
