Click a chord to add it to the end. Drag chords or use the arrows to reorder, and tap the length to change how long each one lasts. Changes come in the next time round. The fretboard follows the music: it lights up each chord’s notes as the chord arrives, with a scale that fits it, and rings the next chord’s notes on the last beat. Click a chord to look at it while stopped. Use the mixer to balance the band, or turn the guitar down to play the chords yourself.

No rhythm notation needed: the space between notes is the rhythm. Each beat is the same width, so a note twice as far from the next one lasts twice as long. Notes ring until the next note on the same string.

Guitar Tuner

Tap a string to hear it, or start the tuner and play

The tuner listens through your microphone, works out which string you're playing and goes green when you're within 3 cents. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere. The tuner is also in the menu at the top of every page.

How to use the Backing Track Creator

Pick a key and a scale, a time signature and a drum groove, then build your chord progression by clicking the chords in the key. Or start from a ready-made progression: pop and rock favourites, blues including a standard 12-bar with 7th chords, jazz progressions and one or two-chord vamps for practising modes. Drag the chords to reorder them, and tap the length to change how long each one lasts.

Random progressions

Stuck for ideas? Press Random for a fresh progression in 4/4: a new key and mode, chords that all belong to that key, a groove and a tempo to suit. Keep pressing until something grabs you, then change whatever you like.

Grooves, time signatures and swing

There are 32 drum grooves across 4/4, 3/4, 6/8, 5/4 and 7/8, from straight rock and half-time to funk, hip-hop, shuffle and reggae. The bass, guitar and synth follow the style of the groove, and the bass locks in with the kick drum. Add swing, a tambourine, shaker or cowbell, and set the tempo anywhere from 50 to 200 BPM.

Mixing the band

The mixer lets you balance drums, bass, guitar, synth pad, percussion and the click. Turn the guitar down to play the chords yourself, or keep it up and solo over the top. If you switch the I play option to bass, the bass part steps aside so you can play it.

Practice ideas

  • Over a slow progression, aim for a chord tone on the first beat of each chord. Use the arpeggios in the Fretboard Navigator to find them.
  • Set up a one-chord vamp in Dorian or Mixolydian and get the sound of the mode in your ears before you worry about patterns.
  • Try 5/4 or 7/8 with the click on until the groove feels natural rather than counted.
  • Prefer a full band recording? The links under the mixer search YouTube for tracks in the same key, tempo and style.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free, and do I need to download anything?

It's free and runs in your browser. There's nothing to install and no sign-up.

Can I use it to practise bass?

Yes. Switch the I play option at the top of the page to bass and the backing track mutes its own bass part so you can play it yourself.

What key should I use for a blues jam?

A, E and G are the classic guitar blues keys. Choose your key, then pick the 12-bar blues from the Start from menu with 7th chords turned on.

Can I save my backing track?

Yes. The page address updates as you build it, so bookmark the page or copy the address to come back to the same track or share it.
