See Mentorship PlansThe E♭ minor scale is E♭ F G♭ A♭ B♭ C♭ D♭, with 6 flats (E♭, G♭, A♭, B♭, C♭, D♭). Build a chord on each note of the scale using only notes from the key and you get these seven chords:
| Number | Chord | |
|---|---|---|
| i | E♭m | Home |
| ii° | Fdim | |
| III | G♭ | |
| iv | A♭m | |
| v | B♭m | |
| VI | C♭ | |
| VII | D♭ |
Upper case numbers are major chords, lower case are minor, and ° is diminished. Numbering chords like this means a progression works in any key.
Minor keys often borrow a major V chord, B♭, from the harmonic minor scale. It pulls back to E♭m much more strongly than the minor v.
Use the E♭ minor scale or the E♭ minor pentatonic. Aim for the notes of each chord as it comes round: see the scale on the fretboard, or make a backing track in E♭ minor to practise over.
E♭ minor shares its notes and chords with F♯ major. If a song uses these chords, the chord that feels like home tells you which of the two it's in.
